When the audience arrives they are immediately transported into the heightened world of the Elizabethan England, and more specifically, into the tavern in which Shakespeare’s theater company frequent after each of their performances, The Toil&Trouble. They are greeted first by the tavern’s staff— the owner of the establishment, the Shakespeare-obsessed bar maid, and, of course, the town drunk. As they are being seated they learn that they, the audience, have just come from a performance of Romeo and Juliet, and are here to celebrate with the cast members from the show, who will arrive shortly thereafter. As the night unfolds, the audience will discover that Shakespeare has just debuted the play for the new King, in hopes that their company will win his favor, and become the official Royal Players of the King’s Court. They are certain of their success, until a mysterious messenger arrives with a threat that could not only sabotage their potential new position, but also wipe Shakespeare from the history books, and destroy their livelihoods forever.
